Jo LEINEN (S&D, DE), Chair of the Delegation for Relations with China, accompanied by Vice-Chairs Reinhard BÜTIKOFER (Greens/EFA, DE) and Frank ENGEL (EPP, LU) will lead the EP Delegation for Relations with China to the 37th Inter-parliamentary Meeting (IPM) with the National People’s Congress of China. They will be joined by Ingeborg GRÄSSLE (EPP, DE), Wim VAN DE CAMP (EPP, NL), Maria João RODRIGUES (S&D, PT), Hans-Olaf HENKEL (ECR, DE), Helmut SCHOLZ (GUE-NGL, DE) and Nicola CAPUTO (S&D, IT). MEPs will meet with their counterparts in Beijing to discuss pending legislative developments such as new provisions on NGOs and cybersecurity, as well as subjects of mutual interest in the areas of the economy – China’s One Belt One Road initiative and the European Fund for Strategic Investment – and sustainable development. The delegation will also travel to Shenyang in the country’s north eastern industrial heartland to observe the results of a difficult transformation from heavy industry to a more sustainable urban centre. Attention will also be given to challenges in the climate for European businesses and to human rights issues. The Delegation is also expected to meet with representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Reform and Development Commission, and representatives of Chinese and European civil society.
